gaping

Nothing too serious, just doodles today. After looking at this one again though, I felt reminded of the movie Mirror Mask, which has some fun, creepy and totally inspired artwork. Speaking of artistic movies, I recently saw A Scanner Darkly for the first time. I had been waiting and waiting for it to come out, and when it did, never took the time to see it until now. Silly. But I was a little disappointed, mainly because I thought it too closely resembled reality, and also because I was expecting the same spontaneity found in the previous one done by the same director - Richard Linklater, called Waking Life. Great movie there, with lots of fun ideas to chew on, both philosophically and visually!

  1. Great drawing! I checked this on my phone today while I was out, and I could see the picture but not the text... and I totally thought Mirrormask too! Crazy.

And I agree about A Scanner Darkly. Sadly. I mean, I still liked it, but it wasn't wite as cool as I'd hoped.

  4. recently saw Scanner Darkly on DVD and I didn't even know it was going to be animation. I agree it was too real, not one thing or the other - I was sceptical as to whether it was really just a regular film post-processed, not much is genuine thesedays... hey, I'm an animation purist! I only like it when the critter runs off the cliff and keeps going until he thinks about it then...

  5. lol! I also feel the same about animation. I took a look at the director commentary about the process of scanner darkly, and they shot the whole movie in entirety, simply to overlay each frame with vector color maps. I'm glad I didn't work on that movie! Tons of work for not really going outside of the "box". I agree with you Ian, one could use animation for a much greater extension of imagination. Linklater said that his first attempt with this style of animating (in waking life) was just an experiment which he moved on from, and it only tells me that maybe I should trust in my experimental instincts more often, not allowing "perfection" to start analyzing and critiquing the spontaneous.

I don't know silent hill...a movie or television, or something else? (I only use the TV for rented movies.)

  6. Cool drawing. I watched A Scanner Darkly not too long ago. I don't know if the reality bothered me so much. I haven't seen Waking Life, I'm gonna check that out.

I felt the way it was "post processed" (good word Ian) was an attempt to give the audience the idea of fracturing conciousness. This may be way off base, of course. The hard edges and moving planes giving the sense that something inside your head is trying to cover up/alter the images/reality around you.

Cool stuff though, and who can't like Robert Downey Jr's part.

  7. His acting made the movie so funny for me. It's not something I would want to watch at night though, I felt a subtle depression about the whole story, especially near the end. Kind of the way Trainspotting gets to me in a sad way.

There was a particular part during the middle where I felt confusion of parts, as if my own mind was under the influence, and it's probably those fractures that you're talking about...or maybe I was just tired watching it. I can't really say. In those ways, the animation does a good subtle job. Maybe it's the story in general too, that I was not ready to take in with the beauty of someone's artwork.

  8. I think my expectations were the problem - getting in my way of seeing this movie with fresh eyes, maybe.

  9. well, I'll tell you the truth. half way through and I really thought he'd hit a wall - like, how the hell we going to film the morphing suit scenes with our small studio budget?! hey, let's do an animation instead! ah, it was okay I suppose.

right ester - links in comments. it's just a bit of html code. like this below only substitute pointy brackets < for square brackets [

  10. First off, marvelous drawing Ester! Secondly, I've been wanting to see "Scanner" as well but the comercials and trailers seemed to reflect what you just said about it. I love and own "Waking Life" but may still check out Scanner. Mirror Mask looks pretty awesome as well--need to see that one. Great post!

  11. oh Thank you so much Ian!

Yeah, Mirror Mask is definitely one for your shelf too Steve (in my opinion). It's really creative, I think you'll like it :)

  12. You might be right about the morphing suit Ian. I'm gonna try to get Waking Life this weekend. Yeah Steve, Mirrormask is a must have. It's on my list for purchase, and a tower. Haha

  13. If you like Mirror Mask, then you need this!!! Heh, I'm always to lazy to enter the code in comments, but the link was really long.

As for A Scanner Darkly, I thought the point of animating over the film was, aside from being beautiful (which I thought it was) a subtle nod to one of Dick's constant themes of "what is real?"

It's something he touched on in almost all of his work. The constant questioning of what is reality, or what is real. I dunno, I thought it worked perfectly considering the nature of the story. And, the scanner suits alone were worth it. That and I liked the colors.

Also, this is one of the only movies where I can stand Keanu. And Woody Harrelson was great! I'll certainly get the DVD.

  14. that's cool Sail :) I really enjoyed their colors too. Thanks for that link, I'll check that book out.
